LONG-AWAITED repairs to footpaths in a Newmarket-on-Fergus estate are to take place later this year.

Footpath repairs at Woodland Heights in Newmarket-on-Fergus are to be completed as part of the Shannon Municipal District’s footpath maintenance contractor which is currently underway, senior executive engineer Tom Mellett confirmed. He expected that the works would be completed before the end of 2021.

An appeal to complete the repairs and to cut back the overgrowth impacting on the visibility of motorists was issued by Cllr Pat McMahon (FF) at the November meeting of the Shannon Municipal District. His proposal was seconded by Cllr John Crowe (FG).

“There is a mix of people living in the estate, some are retired and some are working, it is a very steep hill leading up to it. It is a broad estate corralled in,” McMahon explained.

In June of this year, the Newmarket-on-Fergus had previously made the call and highlighted that wheelchair bound residents in Woodland Heights were being forced out onto the main road when outside due to the standard of the footpaths.
