Clare duo Rachel Whelan and Marie Donnellan will be teeing off from the St Andrews golf course tomorrow (Monday) in the Coronation Foursomes Grand Final.

Their trip to Scotland comes off the back of winning the Area Final of the Coronation Foursomes which took place in Hermitage, Dublin, their success in the East Clare qualifying competition allowed them to partake in the national event.

As a result of winning the Area Final, Rachel and Marie secured an all expenses paid trip to St Andrews where they will fly the Irish flag playing against fifteen other pairs from Northern Ireland, Scotland, England and Wales. The R&A Coronation Foursomes is the largest domestic golf participation event for women and girls in Great Britain and Ireland, with over 25,000 golfers from 1,100 clubs taking part in 2019.

Rachel from Sixmilebridge and Kilkishen native Marie started playing golf two years ago as part of the ‘get into golf’ programme hosted by the ladies club at East Clare Golf Club. The programme consisted of 8 weeks of lessons. The lessons took place both on the driving range and on the course where we were assisted by members of the ladies club.

They became full members of East Clare Golf Club in 2018 and have progressed to a level where they are now representing their country in the since starting the sport in 2017.
