PULL IN POINTS along busy tourist routes in North and West Clare are needed to minimise traffic disruption, elected representatives have said.

In a recent proposal before the West Clare Municipal District, Cllr Joe Garrihy (FG) cited “road safety” as he appealed for pull in points along strategic link roads to be surfaced “where issues with road width and passing difficulties exist”.

He added, “I ask that this approach is adapted as part of the roadworks program and that we engage where necessary with private landowners to get the consents required which will allow surfacing of these pull in points to the same level as the road being done”.

Enda MacNamara, senior executive engineer in the West Clare MD clarified that the MD “do not carry out surfacing works outside of the extents of the public road maintained by Clare County Council. However, when resurfacing works are occurring on a strategic link road, surfacing of pull in areas used regularly by motorists can be assessed and discussed with private landowners”.

Pinch points have been a regular item of discussion when strategies are being put forward, Cllr Garrihy flagged. “I was contacted by a number of people adjacent to a road which is famous for a bus coming across as a rat run to our Municipal District,” the Lisdoonvarna representative revealed.

Cllr Joe Killeen (FF) recalled a recent incident where five cars were travelling en-convoy from Ballyvaughan to the Cliffs of Moher, “they pulled in in the middle of the road to see a fishing competition,” he reflected. “We need pull in areas and we’ve known it for a long time,” Killeen stressed.
