St. Flannan’s senior rugby campaign is off to a winning start, with a 40-5 triumph over Salesian Secondary College, Pallaskenry in the Boys Schools Bowen B Shield Quarter-Final.

St. Flannan’s College provided a colossal performance in the school’s first rugby outing in quite some time, in front of roughly 30 spectators in attendance, whilst togging out in the Ennis R.F.C. kit.

St. Flannan’s Fly-Half, Marco Cleary starred for the Ennis secondary school, kicking 10 points from the tee, along with a try to add his tally to fifteen points.

The Ennis boys produced an impressive start to the game, earning a penalty just outside the 22 metre line, only for Marco Cleary to kick just wide of the posts.

Soon after within the opening five minutes, outside-centre Odhran Flynn broke through the Limerick school’s defensive line and touched down underneath the post, followed by a Marco Cleary conversion.

Discipline subsequently reduced Salesian College to fourteen men, however Bryan Murphy’s (Head Coach) men capitalised and scored another try, this time from No. 8 Ethan Boyle.

Heading towards the half-time whistle, inside-centre Jack Dillon managed to squeeze through the Pallaskenry defence to get the third and final try of the half, as Cleary converted.

However, the Limerick team began to threaten just before the half-time whistle, which saw them as close as five metres from the Flannan’s try line. Until second-row Adrian Moloney made a great interception, just underneath the posts, as well as a try saving tackle in the corner to leave the scoreline at 21-0 to the home side at the break.

The second-half took a bit of time to get into gear, where Salesian went back down to fourteen men with No.7 going into the bin, once returned, Pallaskenry got in for their first points of the game from their loosehead prop. The conversion was kicked wide.

From this point on, Flannan’s ran riot, as Marco Cleary touched down in the corner, followed by a tremendous kick.

Openside flanker Seán Cassidy earned a try slightly to the left of Salesian Colleges’ post to compel his name onto the scoresheet. However rather than converting from the tee, Marco Cleary converted from a Dropkick.

And just before the full-time whistle was blown, Odhran Flynn got in for his second try to bring the final scoreline to 40-5 as Cleary missed the last conversion.

Marco Cleary, Jack Dillon, Cian Enright, Odhran Flynn, and Adrian Moloney did well for the Ennis Secondary School.
