Blossoms on the Go owner Shirley Brohan has the inside expertise on keeping up with the super cute cottage core garden trend.

July is a month of abundant blooms and fantastic arrangements in the gardens and beds coming together. This year has seen an increase in the cottage garden trend being used in beds and borders. If you are trying to achieve this look, here are a few plants that can help create a beautiful cottage garden scene:

  • Digitalis purpurea, commonly known as foxglove, has tall spikes of brightly coloured flowers and can grow up to 3 feet tall. They are great for pollinators.
  • Erigeron is a lovely, long-flowering, daisy-like perennial.
  • Lavandula angustifolia ‘Hidcote’ is a variety with tall purple spike flowers at the top. It has many uses but looks particularly well in a cottage garden scene.
  • Alchemilla mollis, commonly known as lady’s mantle, has star-shaped flowers that appear in clusters at the top of the foliage. Its foliage provides excellent contrast with other plants.
  • Delphinium has beautiful tall spikes of densely packed flowers.
  • Phlox is another stunning plant with clusters of small, fragrant pink flowers.
  • Leucanthemum, also known as Shasta daisy, features classic daisy flowers with yellow centres and long flowering periods throughout the summer.

If you are hoping to add more plants, the above are just a few that can enhance your beautiful beds.

Tips for July:

  • Nourish your plants. Treat your garden to top-quality fertiliser and feed as it grows. Sweet peas, roses, dahlias, and tomatoes will need the right food at this time of year.
  • Don’t forget to hydrate your garden and pots regularly. Sometimes the rain that falls isn’t enough, so check that plants with abundant foliage allow rainwater to reach the ground. Early morning watering is best as it allows plants to absorb moisture before the heat of the day.
  • Regular weeding helps reduce competition for water and nutrients. Mulching can help to reduce weeds and conserve moisture. Removing spent flowers encourages more blooms and keeps plants looking good for longer.

Most of all, sit back and enjoy your amazing garden creation and watch the beauty unfold.
