SHANNON schools and the homes belonging to Board of Management members in the town were targeted by anti-vaxxers and anti-mask protesters within the past week.
Graffiti was sprayed on the walls of primary schools within Shannon including Gaelscoil Donnacha Rua and St Conaires National School between Thursday night and Friday morning.
Schools moved swiftly to remove the rhetoric which questioned the administering of vaccines and benefits of face masks.
Homes owned by members of Board of Management from one in the town was also targeted following the decision by Government on the recommendation of the National Public Health Emergency Team (NPHET) to introduce the wearing of face masks for students in primary schools.
No reports of such criminal damage have been issued to An Garda Síochána, a spokesperson confirmed to The Clare Echo.
Speaking to The Clare Echo, Cllr Donna McGettigan (SF) outlined that she was aware of two incidents which occurred surrounding Shannon schools late last week. She believed the manner of this protest was “not the way” for such demonstrations to be held.
“If you have a message, do it in your own property, everyone has a right to protest but go ahead and do it on your own property, stand at the side of the road with a sign or banner if you wish but do not go out to upset people,” the Shannon representative added.
Secretary of Shannon Tidy Towns, Derek Clune told The Clare Echo “it is terrible and disgraceful that this would happen”. He expressed sympathy with the schools impacted who were only “implementing the protocol” issued to them. “Graffiti and vandalism, we are completely against that. This is the last thing we want in our town. Derek encouraged members of the public with any additional information to come forward to An Garda Síochána.
