CO CLARE has recorded a steady and high voter turnout for the 2024 General Election.

Early projections are that Clare’s turnout will be just shy of the 65.9% total from the 2020 General Election.

Clarecastle with a staggering 81 percent has the highest turnout in the county which is expected to result in Leonora Carey (FG) polling well in her native village.

Strong turnouts have also been recorded in Lahinch (73.1%), Tulla (71.5%) which will be a battle between Cllr Joe Cooney (FG) and Senator Timmy Dooley (FF), Dromindoora (72.36%), Lissycasey (69%), Quin (68%) and Sixmilebridge Courthouse (70%).

In a 24 hour poll conducted among 428 readers of The Clare Echo, the majority of respondents said they would vote for Fianna Fáil, followed by Other, Fine Gael and Sinn Féın. Readers were asked who they would vote for, Fianna Fáil were top at 29% followed by Other (28%), Fine Gael (25%) and Sinn Féin (18%).

Nationally, an exit poll suggests that Fine Gael and Sinn Féin are virtually tied when it comes to first preference votes with Fianna Fáil slightly further back. The exit poll, carried out by Ipsos Behaviour and Attitudes for RTÉ, The Irish Times, TG4 and Trinity College Dublin, indicates all three parties are separated by just 1.6% with the margin of error 1.4%.

Fine Gael are on 21%; Fianna Fáil secured 19.5%; while Sinn Féin obtained 21.1%.

The exit poll is based on 5,018 completed interviews conducted immediately after people voted at polling stations in 43 constituencies across the country.

It indicates Green Party first preference support stands at 4%; Labour at 5%; the Social Democrats at 5.8%; Aontú at 3.6%; People Before Profit-Solidarity at 3.1%; and Independents at 12.7%, Independent Ireland 2.2% with others on 1.9%.
