Parents in Clooney have been asked to remain vigilant following a suspicious approach to a primary school student on Wednesday.

Shortly after school concluded on Wednesday, a man driving a small van approached one pupil of Clooney NS and told the boy his mother asked him to collect him. The boy refused and went to his mother who was waiting down the road, upon hearing the recollection of the story she immediately rang An Garda Síochána.

After unsuccessfully trying to entice the child to his van, the man drove off and departed the scene.

In correspondence to parents and guardians which has been obtained by The Clare Echo, principal of Clooney NS, Shane Greene described it “an extremely serious and upsetting incident”.

“I would ask that we all remain vigilant. parents should remind children not to leave the school grounds until their car is visible after school,” he advised.

Gardaí have confirmed that enquiries remain ongoing.
