Ongoing flooding problems at “a very extensive dairy farm” in Newmarket-on-Fergus have led to appeals for repairs and upgrades to the access road to it.

Clare County Council were called on by Cllr Pat McMahon (FF) “to repair and upgrade the road” in Mooghaun, Newmarket-on-Fergus leading to the entrance of Paddy McCormack’s house and farm “due to heavy flooding at various times in the year”. His proposal was seconded by Cllr John Crowe (FG).

An assessment will be completed to determine necessary measures, senior executive engineer Tom Mellett responded. “Following assessment, a determination will be made as to how to secure funding for works identified”.

Cllr McMahon told a recent sitting of the Shannon Municipal District that it is an “ongoing flooding problem” during periods of heavy rain. He explained, “It is a very extensive dairy farm of nearly 200 cows, a huge amount of cows”.

He said that the road is used a link to East Clare and by people travelling to and from both Quin and Newmarket-on-Fergus. McMahon felt the localised flooding outside McCormacks could be solved but acknowledged the railway flooding in the vicinity was a bigger issue.
