Ongoing flooding problems at โ€œa very extensive dairy farmโ€ in Newmarket-on-Fergus have led to appeals for repairs and upgrades to the access road to it.

Clare County Council were called on by Cllr Pat McMahon (FF) โ€œto repair and upgrade the roadโ€ in Mooghaun, Newmarket-on-Fergus leading to the entrance of Paddy McCormackโ€™s house and farm โ€œdue to heavy flooding at various times in the yearโ€. His proposal was seconded by Cllr John Crowe (FG).

An assessment will be completed to determine necessary measures, senior executive engineer Tom Mellett responded. โ€œFollowing assessment, a determination will be made as to how to secure funding for works identifiedโ€.

Cllr McMahon told a recent sitting of the Shannon Municipal District that it is an โ€œongoing flooding problemโ€ during periods of heavy rain. He explained, โ€œIt is a very extensive dairy farm of nearly 200 cows, a huge amount of cowsโ€.

He said that the road is used a link to East Clare and by people travelling to and from both Quin and Newmarket-on-Fergus. McMahon felt the localised flooding outside McCormacks could be solved but acknowledged the railway flooding in the vicinity was a bigger issue.
