A new committee has been elected to the Love Shannon Community Council.

Founded in the aftermath of the failure to secure adequate funding for The Venue, a planned social, civic and cultural space for the town, Love Shannon has evolved from a community group aiming to make the area a better place to live and work into a Community Council.

Over a fortnight ago, Love Shannon held a public meeting in an attempt to recruit new individuals as officers prior to holding an AGM.

On Wednesday last, Derek Clune a volunteer with Shannon Tidy Towns and former GAA referee was returned as Chairman. Darragh O’Connor owner of Texaco in Shannon was also returned to the role of Vice Chairman. Ballycar based Fiona O’Brien Maxwell is among the new additions to the Community Council.

Niamh O’Callaghan, one of the founding members of Love Shannon vacated the role of secretary and treasurer with Audrey Conway and Tony Walsh taking on roles following her departure. Gerry Murphy, Elton Good, Denise O’Brien and Dara O’Callaghan were also co-founders but did not hold officer positions prior to this year’s AGM.

Presently, the Community Council are analysing the draft of the Shannon Town Centre Masterplan and intend to make a submission to Clare County Council on this in the coming weeks.

Their meetings in the New Year will focus on setting out a new vision and role for the town of Shannon and the role Love Shannon will play in this.
