MICHELANGELO’s services would be warranted in Shannon given the amount of paintwork required to signs in the town, a local representative has quipped.
Visibility of speed signs leading into small cul de sac areas are not strong enough in parts of Shannon, Cllr Donna McGettigan (SF) highlighted. She requested the Shannon Municipal District to conduct an assessment on the type and size of existing signs while underlining that speed limit signs of 30km/h approaching cul de sacs had poor visibility.
Tom Mellett, senior executive engineer in the Shannon MD explained, “The design and size of speed signs is regulated by the Traffic Signs Manual issued by the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport. If signs are missing or inadequate, the Shannon MD will replace them”.
Bigger signs will help to clamp down on motorists speeding in residential areas, McGettigan believed. “What I’ve come across here, if you’re turning into a small cul de sac by where we live you’re looking at people trying to cross the road, the signs need to be bigger to help stop people speeding into the areas”.
Support for the proposal was voiced by Cllr Gerry Flynn (IND). He noted that some signs were “obliterated” in Shannon and commented, “I think we need Michelangelo to come out and do a bit of paintwork, some of the signs are fading”.
