Meelick landowners have expressed their willingness to give land for re-alignment of “a dangerous section of road” in South Clare.

An appeal for realignment work at Fian Cross and a reduction of the speed limit between it and Gavin’s Cross was issued by Cllr PJ Ryan (IND) at the March meeting of the Shannon Municipal District. His proposal was seconded by Cllr Pat McMahon (FF).

“In relation to this junction, this office will liaise with the Council’s Road Design Office to determine what options there are in relation to realigning the junction. In relation to the speed limit, these are reviewed periodically. When the next review commences this road will be considered,” senior executive engineer Tom Mellett responded.

Landowners are willing to assist with such works, Cllr Ryan informed the meeting. “This is a very dangerous section of the road, there has been a fatality there in the last couple of years. It has been conveyed to me that the land owners in questions have told me they are willing to give whatever piece of land is necessary to re-align this junction”.

He continued, “It has become a very busy road due to the pandemic. A lot of people walk and drive there, we don’t want to wait until there is another fatality before we do something with it”.
