AN INTERNATIONAL donor has claimed the rights to Tony Griffin’s coveted All Star, with an enormous €15,000 bid meaning the 2006 trophy is heading overseas.
Energy Atlantica from Nova Scotia in Canada came in with the top bid and speaking today, Griffin confirmed that a mystery donation will match the €15,000 bid meaning that the Ballyea man has raised an incredible €30,000 to help war victims in Ukraine. The former Clare forward who retired in 2009 has close links to Nova Scotia from his time studying in Canada.
The author of the best-selling Teenager’s Book Of Life said, “Thanks to everyone who put a bid in and sent messages of support and positivity, the good news is that amount will be matched by an anonymous donor bringing the whole amount going to the Red Cross to €30,000 and that will be to fund humanitarian aid in Ukraine so it’s a brilliant cause and hopefully it will do exactly what we want it to do which is help those of us, our brothers and sisters, who need it.”
Griffin, who earlier spoke of feeling helpless about the crisis in Ukraine. was awarded a coveted All-Star award in 2006 – having previously been nominated for the award in 2004 and 2005.
