In round five in the Future Ticketing Clare Cup senior hurling league, leaders in division 1 A, Kilmaley suffered their first defeat when they went under to Feakle.

Elsewhere O’Callaghans Mills continued their good form when they defeated their neighbours Sixmilebridge while Inagh/Kilnamona, Crusheen and Newmarket-on-Fergus also recorded wins.

In a high scoring tie in Division 1B, Clooney/Quin had three points to spare over Scariff while Clarecastle suffered their first defeat when going down to Cratloe. Whitegate finished strongly to pip Parteen/Meelick while Wolfe Tones accounted for Smith O’Briens and St. Joseph’s Doora/Barefield were narrow winners over Tubber.

With four rounds to play, it is still all to play for at both the top and bottom ends of the tables.

Inagh/Kilnamona dominate first half exchanges

Inagh/Kilnamona built up a big lead when playing with the aid of a strong wind in the first half of this tie played at Inagh on Sunday.

On a day when David Mescall top scored with 0-8, they had an eleven point advantage at the midpoint of the tie when the score was 0-16 to 0-5.

Helped by a goal from Stiofan McMahon, Broadford rallied somewhat in the second half but the sending off of Cathal Chaplin reduced them to fourteen men and from here on they struggled against the Louis Mulqueen managed mid Clare outfit.

Eleven players shared in the winner’s impressive tally with Josh Guyler and Darren Cullinan each contributing 0-3 while goalkeeper Éamonn Foudy landed two long range frees.

Clare senior inter county panellists Foudy and Paddy Donnellan were released to play with their clubs. Donnellan operated in a sweeper role for Broadford.

Newmarket-on-Fergus followed their previous round victory over Crusheen with this win over Clonlara on Saturday.

A strong second half showing when they had goals from Peter Power and substitute David Frost played a big part in this impressive win on a day when

All-Ireland senior medalists with Clare in 2013, Colin Ryan (Newmarket-on-Fergus) and Colm Galvin (Clonlara) made appearances from the substitutes bench.

Clonlara edged the opening half and helped by 0-4 from Mícheál O’Loughlin they lad 0-10 to 0-8 at the break.

The home side did better after the break and the got the upperhand in key positions. They deserved their win but they were made battle all the way for the points

Ross Hayes landed nine points as Crusheen accounted for Ballyea in this Clare Cup tie played on Sunday afternoon.

Visitors Ballyea led at the half way point on a 0-10 to 0-6 scoreline but Crusheen upped a gear after the break in a tie in which the loss of Jack Browne to injury proved costly for Ballyea.

Jamie Fitzgibbon and Conor O’Donnell each scored 0-4 for the winners while Fergus Kennedy, returning to action following injury, contributed 0-2

Mills maintain strong challenge

A strong final ten minutes to the open half played a key role as O’Callaghans Mills overcame neighbours Sixmilebridge on Sunday.

Substitute Darragh Moroney struck for his side’s goal shortly after his introduction and this helped the winners to lead 1-11 to 0-8 at the break.

On the day goalkeeper Killian Nugent converted three long range frees while other point scorers included Conor Cooney, Sean Cotter and Fionn Hickey.

A Shane Golden goal helped the ‘Bridge to stage a rally in the second half but a more settled O’Callaghans Mills held on for a merited win on a day when both sides lined out without a number of regulars due to injuries and inter county commitments.

McGrath’s goal seals victory for Feakle

Kilmaley suffered their first defeat in this season’s Clare Cup campaign when losing to Feakle on Sunday.

Kilmaley went in front inside the first minute with a point from a free by Michael O’Malley but it was Feakle who had the better of the early exchanges to lead 1-3 to 0-1 after 5 minutes, the goal coming from a long-range Gary Guilfoyle free.

Kilmaley came more into it as the half went on and a goal from Colm Killeen after 17 minutes made it a one point game. Feakle led by 2 points after 28 minutes with a good score from Shane McGrath but it was Kilmaley who finished the half strong with points from O’Malley (0-2) and Gearoid O’Grady to lead 1-9 to 1-8 at half time.

Feakle started the second half well and 6 points in a row saw them go five points in front at the three quarter stage. Joe Carmody reduced the lead with Kilmaley’s first score of the second half a minute later before Michael O’Neill closed the gap to three.

A Shane McGrath free had Feakle four in front again. Points from Carmody (0-2) and Daire Keane left one point between the sides with seven minutes remaining. With the tie in the balance good play from Feakle saw Shane McGrath get some space in front of the Kilmaley goal and he made no mistake when finding the Kilmaley net and ensure there was no way back for the home side as Feakle earned a deserved victory on the day.

McGrath finished with 1-6 for the winners while Oisin Donnellan had 0-2 with Eoin Tuohy and Martin Daly scoring 0-2 each.

Forty three scores in a tie which saw the teams level on fourteen occasions provided lots of entertainment for spectators at a sunny Clooney venue Sunday as the home side finished strongly to account for Scariff.

From an early stage it was clear that the outcome would be in doubt to the finish and so it proved. The teams were tied at 0-12 each at half time having been level on nine occasions during the half.

Scariff outscored the winners 0-3 to 0-1 in the early minutes of the second half, one of their points being a well struck sideline cut from midfielder Scott Cairns. The winners then hit three in a row and the sides were level for the twelfth time at the three quarter stage when the score was 0-17 each.

Points were exchanged twice more in the next tean minutes and everything ointed to a share of the spoils when the teams were level at 0-19 each with four minutes of normal time remaining.

Dylan Cunningham and Dara Kegh (free) put the home side two clear but an Eanna O’Brien free kept the visitors in contention.

Substitute Eoin Guilfoyle and acy corner forward Dannan Fox pointed for the home team to seal victory. On a day when Shane McNamara, Conor Grogan, Dara Keogh, Jimmy Corry, Callum Hassett, Dylan Cunningham and Dannan Fox were prominent.

Wolfe Tones collected their first win in this season’s Clare Cup campaign when they overcame Smith O’Briens at Shannon on Sunday.

In a tight contest the Shannon men finished strongly to claim the points, scoring 1-1 in the closing minutes.

Visitors Smith O’Briens led by two points, 1-11 to 1-9 at half time the Killaloe side’s goal coming from Micheal Ryan who was their top scorer on the day with 1-9 to his credit.

Aaron Cunningham had the winner’s first half goal.
Oisin O’Rourke and Billy Connors found the net in the second half for the winners while John Cusack was the Killaloe side’s goalscorer in the second period.

Keenan hits the winner for Whitegate

An injury time point from Ciaran Keenan steered Whitegate to victory over Parteen/Meelick in a game played at Whitegate on Sunday morning.

Parteen/Meelick looked to be heading for victory when they led in the closing stages but the home side finished strongly.

A goal from full forward Ronan Hayes levelled the tie a minute from the end of normal time before Keenan sent over the winning point.

The winners played with the aid of the breeze in the opening half and they took a two point lead to the break when the score was 0-12 to 1-7, the loser’s goal coming from Oisin Hickey who finished the game with 1-7 to his credit while Clare senior panellist Jack Kirwan contributed 0-6.

Clarecastle suffered their first defeat in this season’s division 1 B hurling league when going under to Cratloe on Thursday evening.

The winners got off to a bring start and they were well on their way to victory by half time when they led by fourteen points, 0-18 to 0-4.

Amongst the scorers for the winners in the opening half were Rian Considine, Cathal and Jack McInerney, Luke Healy, Conor McGrath, Sam Sheehy, David Collins and Shane Neville.

Clarecastle did show a big improvement in the second half led by Patrick Kelly who excelled on the day. Oisin Whelan contributed 0-5 for his team while Josh Brack also got on the scoresheet.

At the end of the oening half the Doora-Barefield outfit led on double scores, 0-10 to 0-5

Tubber made a strong start to the second half which helped them to go into the lead with a goal from Domhnaill McMahon rovind a great boost.

The home side hit back and a goal from Cian Barron proved decisive as they eeked out a narrow victory.
