COUNTY champions Feakle have recorded their first win of 2025 with Clarecastle and Newmarket-on-Fergus also getting off the mark in the Clare Cup.
Seven games in round 3 in the willwego.com Clare cup (senior hurling league) were played at the weekend when Feakle, Clarecastle and Newmarket-on-Fergus collected their first wins while St Joseph’s Doora/Barefield and Corofin suffered their first defeats of the campaign.
High scoring was the order of the day in most games with all teams lining out without players who are involved with Clare teams in the Munster under 20 and senior inter county championships.
Thirteen for Shane as Feakle get first win
Feakle 0-23
Inagh-Kilnamona 0-21
Venue: Feakle
In this high scoring tie at Feakle on Saturday afternoon the sides were level on no less that eleven occasions, eight of which were in the opening half at the end of which the visitors were one ahead, 0-12 to 0-11.
The respective free takers, Shane McGrath for the home side and Keelan Guyler, each scored six points in that first half.
Guyler didn’t return for the second half due to injury and Conner Hegarty took over the freetaking duties.
Points were exchanged six times in the opening quarter before the visitors opened a two point lead but the home side were back on terms five minutes from the interval, Martin Daly pointing after making a superb catch.
When Inagh/Kilnamna landed three points in as many minutes after the resumption of play to go four clear it looked like they might pull away but Feakle responded impressively with two from Shane McGrath and one from Owen McGann.

The teams then exchanged points twice before McGrath levelled the tie for the ninth time.
Inagh/Kilnamona substitute Darren Cullinan looked to be in for a goal but Feakle goalie Liam O’Connor made a marvellous save.
The sides again swapped points twice before Feakle landed three in a row from Ronan O’Connor, Owen McGann and McGrath to go three clear with the final whistle approaching.
Jason McCarthy and Conner Hegarty replied for Inagh/Kilnamona but Feakle had the final say and McGrath fired over his thirteenth of the tie with the last puck of the game to seal victory.

Venue; Gurteen
Clarecastle claimed their first win of this campaign when they accounted for hitherto unbeaten St Josephs at Gurteen on Friday night.

The absence of Ja Colleran and Dara O’Shea from the Doora/Barefield side’s defence was a blow to their hopes of recording another win but full credit must to the Clarecastle men who dominated the key areas and recorded a merited victory.

Clooney/Quin cruise past Wolfe Tones
Clooney/Quin 2-17
Wolfe Tones 0-5
Venue: Wolfe Tones GAA Grounds, Shannon
By Michael Fitzgerald
Clooney/Quin were heavy winners against a poor Wolfe Tones side as the Shannon outfit were mauled 2-17 to 0-05 on Friday evening.
Blinding sunshine killed Wolfe Tones in the first half as they failed to win puck-out after puck-out with Clooney/Quin funneling the ball to their exceptional forward line.
Fergal Lynch’s side looked sharp in the first ten minutes with Callum Hasset scoring in the first minute. Wolfe Tones scored one of their two points in the first half via an Aaron Cunningham sideline. Cunningham was the their best player on an evening to forget as he notched up a further three frees during the game.
Hassett ran the show from full forward, scoring eight points including four frees and a sideline. The former Clare minor scored a further free in the second half as well as splitting the posts from play again in the thirty-sixth minute. Jerry O’Connor scored a goal from right corner forward after fifteen minutes which helped create their 1-10 0-2 half time cushion.
Cunningham scored a further three frees for Wolfe Tones in the second half, their only marks on the scoreboard for the thirty minutes. Michael Corry made an instant impact off the bench for Clooney/Quin scoring twice in two minutes from wing forward. Dylan Cunningham added three points to the visitors tally including two in the second half in the forty fifth and sixth minutes.
In the dying moments Clooney/Quin forward Patrick Finneran cut inside off the right and fired a fantastic goal past Oisin O’Rourke, the ball dinging off the right hand post and ricocheting in.

Having suffered narrow defeats to Wolfe tones and Kilmaley in their opening two games, the reigning Clare Cup champions Newmarket-on-Fergus were clearly determined to come out on top in this one.
