In a repeat of last year’s Clare SFC quarter-final, Ennistymon overturned the result when defeating Éire Óg to kick off their Cusack Cup bid with opening round wins also recorded by St Joseph’s Miltown, St Breckans and Doonbeg.

Action also commenced in the Garry Cup where O’Currys, Corofin, Lissycasey and St Josephs Doora/Barefield started off on a high.

Neighbours and arch rivals St Joseph’s Miltown and Kilmurry Ibrickane got the race for the 2022 Cusack Cup title underway on Wednesday evening last when tshe home side emerged with the points.

An early goal from Sean McMahon gave the winners a lead they held throughout on a night when Kilmurry Ibrickane failed to score in the second half.

Both sides are under new management this year with Martin Flynn in charge of Miltown while James Murrihy is managing his native Kilmurry-Ibrickane.

Both introduced a lot of players to senior competitive action in this tie in which Joe Cambell was Kilmurry’s goalscorer

Ennistymon prove too strong for Clare champions

Lahinch hosted the meeting of Ennistymon and Éire Óg on St Patrick’s morning with the home side emerging with the points.

The winners took control from the off and they had built up a lead of eleven points by half time when the score was 2-7 to 0-2, the goals coming from Joe Dowling and Tiernan Hogan.

Substitute Sean McConigley found the net in the second half as the North Clare side powered on to an impressive win.

Kevin Hehir returned to the Ennistymon side having taken a break in 2021, the Magpies this year are managed by Mark Shanahan who succeeded Noel Crowe in the role.

Paul Madden’s Ennis outfit lost two young defenders to injury with Gearoid Collins and Gavin D’Auria bowing out early.

St. Breckans took an early lead in this Cusack Cup tie at Lisdoonvarna on Saturday through the game’s only goal which was scored by Eoin Guerin.

The goal helped the home side to lead at the break on a score of 1-2 to 0-3. St. Breckans landed the first two score of the second half and after Clondegad pulled one back the winners struck for three in a row to open a six point lead which they held to the finish. Both sides were without their current inter county senior and under 20 matchday panellists.

Doonbeg made it third time lucky against Kildysart when they recorded a four point win at Kildysart in this Cusack Cup first round tie at Kildysart on Saturday.

In the corresponding game last year, Kildysart were victorious and just a few weeks ago they again overcame the Magpies, this time in the O’Gorman Cup.

On Saturday the teams were evenly matched throughout the first half and they went to the break locked together at 0-3 each.

Doonbeg got a grip on proceedings in the second half to record a merited win. They welcomed back Sean Conway to action, the former Clare U20 captain missed all of last year’s championship with a shoulder injury. John Keane is manager of the eighteen time champions with stalwarts Conor Whelan, Padraig Gallagher and Kieran O’Mahony part of the management.

O’Currys repeated their first round win of 2021 over Kilmihil when the sides clashed in this season’s opening game at Doonaha on Saturday.

At the end of an evenly contested opening half Kilmihil who played with the aid of the wind, held a one point advantage, 0-7 to 0-6.

Second half goals from Sean Murphy and Danny Downes helped the home side to get the upperhand and they went on to record a merited win.

Kilmihil’s lone scorer on the day was Martin O’Leary who kicked all of their eight points.

Keane’s late goal seals victory for Corofin

A late goal from Kevin Keane helped Corofin to victory over Cooraclare in this Garry cup tie at Cooraclare on St. Patrick’s Day.

The home side who held a four point advantage at half time, were clinging onto a one point lead when Keane was on hand to finish a high delivery to the net.

Josh Ryan and Ian Reidy were the other goalscorers for the winners while Cooraclare’s goals came from Jack Morrissey who converted a penalty in the opening half and Mark Tubridy.

Before this tie got underway a minute’s silence was observed as a mark of respect for Lissycasey GAA president Tomo Hill who died last week.

Both sides will feel that they had chances to win this Garry Cup tie played on St. Patrick’s Day. When playing with the aid of the wind each team missed some great scoring opportunities.

A near galeforce wind blew directly down the pitch and favoured the home side in the opening half. They led at the interval by six points, 0-7 to 0-1 with excellent scores from Niall McCarthy, Enda Finnucane, Oisin Hanrahan and Niall Kelly while Kilrush’s reply came from Gearoid O’Brien.

On the resumption Kilrush piled on the pressure and when Keith Crowley struck for the game’s only goal the margin was down to the minimum.

Throughout the final quarter there was little between the sides but Kilrush looked to have captured the spoils when Liam Madigan converted a 13m free in injury time.

Lissycasey responded and after great work by Oisin Hanrahan and Jack Cahill, goalkeeper Killian Normoyle came up and converted a 40m free into the wind to level the tie.

St. Josephs recorded a comfortable win over a Shannon Gaels tam that lined out without a number of key players due to injury at Gurteen on Saturday.

First half goals from Tom Hannan and Conor Brannock had the home side in a strong position at half time when the score as 2-12 to 0-2.

They continued to dominate in the second half when they added further goals from Eoin Talty who co nverted from the penalty spot, Eoghan Thynne and Tom Mc Donald.
