Newmarket Celtic maintain top spot in the Maloney Garden Premier Division while Ennis Town continued their run of impressive form with Avenue Utd coming out on top against Shannon Town.

Hehir’s strike proves decisive

Two of the fancied teams for honours this season clashed at Roslevan on Sunday in the Premier league and the home side emerged with the points after a lively contest.

Avenue led at the break through a Ronan Kerin goal which was scored three minutes before the half time whistle.

Kerin struck again ten minutes after the break, doubling his side’s lead but Shannon Town came back strongly and for the third week in a row, Gary O’Connell scored. He added two to his collection this week and these scores levelled the contest at 2-2.

Ten minutes from time an Avenue free rebounded off the upright and Conor Hehir was quickest to react and he fired home what proved to be the winner for the Ennis based club.

Strong finish from Ennis Town

Ennis Town continued their impressive early season form when they defeated Sporting Ennistymon in the Premier League on Sunday.

A storming finish from the Ennis side saw them score four times in the last twenty minutes at Lees Road to claim the points.

The winners were down to ten men following the sending off of Peter O’Brien but they dominated the closing period and goals from substitute Robbie Gormley, Sean Perrill and two from Davy Keenan helped them to maintain their winning run.

Sporting Ennistymon’s goals came from Mikolay Augustyn in the first half while Jack O’Dea hit the target in the second period.

Spoils shared at Cassidy Park

A share of the spoils resulted when Lifford entertained Mountshannon Celtic at Cassidy Park on Sunday afternoon.

The visitors took the lead midway through the opening half through Martin Cunningham after he received a pass from William Glass. Cunningham’s effort should have been dealt with by Lifford goalie Rhys Phillips.

Midway through the second half, Lifford equalised through Dean Coughlan who should have put his side into the lead moments later but he failed to avail of an excellent opportunity.

An understrength Mountshannon team will be happy with a share of the spoils but Lifford will rue a number of missed opportunities.

Newmarket Celtic maintained their strong challenge for another Premier Division title when they accounted for Shannon Hibs on Sunday.

The winners led 4-0 at half time and at this time they were well on their way to collecting the points.

They continued to hold the upperhand in the second half and emerged as comfortable winners on a day when David McCsrthy (2), ex Hibs player Jamie Egan and Paddy Purcell (2) were the goalscorers.
