Ennis’ Emma Barrett was a double gold medal winner at this year’s Special Olympics Ireland games.
Emma won gold in the 200m breaststroke and in the 4x100m relay while representing Team South Galway at the National Aquatic Centre.
She trains once a week at the Brothers of Charity pool in Kilcornan, three of her teammates Lorraine Mahon (silver), Timmy Breen (bronze) and Stephen O’Halloran (gold) also collected medals at the games.
They received a big welcome home when they returned via train to Athenry and a celebration took place at their swimming club which included a barbeque and party.
More medals came back to the Banner County via representatives of the Ennis Eagles Special Olympics Bowling Club. Liam Moloney collected two bronze medals, Karen Lynch picked up one while Paul Kirrane narrowly missed out on a medal. The trio were coached by Sue Cave.
Next week the Irish team will be selected for the Special Olympic World Games in Abu Dhabi which take place in March. Emma is hopeful her exploits in Dublin will see her make the selection.
