OVER €110,000 in COVID related sports funding has been announced for Co Clare.

Sporting organisations across the country will benefit from the €80m fund nationally to help them recover from the pandemic.

€62,200 has been allocated to the Clare Sports Partnership, €38,644 has been awarded to the county to target grassroots support with an additional €10,000 funded under a separate stream.

Clare TD, Cathal Crowe (FF) said the importance of sport has never been clearer. “Anybody who heretofore had been out training multiple times a week and playing a match on a weekend suddenly found themselves at a loss. Those of us who have children involved in sport know how difficult it was for kids not to have that outlet. Sports fans who had nothing to watch for a long time also felt the loss. Thankfully, things are recovering in earnest but there’s still a lot to be done from the ground up to help our clubs around Clare and nationwide to ensure their long-term viability”.

“Crucially, this funding aims to ensure that people of all ages and abilities can return to sport, while there is specific monies ringfenced for the purchase of equipment to make sure that all clubs are ready to accept their members back and indeed have capacity for new members. Nationally, larger organisations like the GAA, the IRFU, the FAI, Paralympics Ireland, Basketball Ireland, Athletics Ireland and so on are also receiving significant funding which will benefit Clare and every other county in the country. This is an extremely welcome announcement for all who have sport in their lives and I think when you see the breadth of the clubs that will benefit from funding, it shows that there is a sport out there for everybody,” the Meelick native added.
