Trailing by five points with just ten minutes to go and playing against a stiff wind, not many would have forecast that St. Flannan’s College, Ennis would end up winning this exciting Dr. Harty cup quarter final tie played at Fethard on Monday.

The Ennis side simply refused to accept defeat and they put in a storming finish which ended with Harry Doherty firing over what proved to be the winning point, which came in injury time. It brought the Clarecastle player’s tally for the afternoon to a whopping 1-12.

Playing with the aid of a strong wind in the first half, St. Flannan’s failed to capitalise and their chances looked bleak when they trailed by two points, 0-10 to 1-9 as they headed to the dressing rooms at half time.

Midleton took up where they had left off when the second half got underway and they quickly stretched their lead to five points.

A Harry Doherty goal boosted St. Flannan’s, the Clarecastle teenager’s ‘65 taking a deflection on the way to thee net but the Cork side responded with three unanswered points to restore their five point advantage,

Doherty kept the winners in touch before a Dara Kennedy goal, ten minutes from the end, the Ballyea man having just returned to the action after receiving treatment for an injury.

Marco Cleary levelled for St. Flannans but Midleton responded and went ahead again but Doherty had the final say to sent the famed Ennis school into the semi-final and a meeting with Gall Cholaiste Mhuire from Cork in the semi-final which is scheduled for Wednesday of nex week, January 22

Ard Scoil Ris bow out to strong Thurles CBS side

A powerful second quarter proved decisive for Thurles CBS as they comfortabl progressed to the Harty cup semi-final when accounting for Ard Scoil Ris from Limerick in a tie played at the University of Limerick’s North campus on Monday.

The sides were level four time sin the opening quarer before tshe winners took control and when the half time whistle sounded they were fifteen points clear, 2-17 to 0-8.

There were three Clare players in the Ard Scoil Ris starting line up with Clonlara’s Michael Collins and Eoin Begley and Cratloe’s Ian O’Brien all lining out in the attack. Sixmilebridge club man Conor Murphy was introduced in the second half.

Meanwhile Scariff Community College progressed to the semi-final of the senior B hurling championship (Corn Thomais Mhic Choilm) with a 4-28 to 2-8 victory over Carrick on Suir in a tie also played at the UL, grounds.
