Bus shelters in Shannon have been described as akin with “moving statues”.
Work has commenced on the upgrading of the bus shelter in Drumgeely and several others throughout Shannon town.
JCDecaux are carrying out the works on behalf of the National Transport Authority and are expected to be completed by September.
In a proposal before a recent sitting of the Shannon Municipal District, Cllr Gerry Flynn (IND) proposed that the Drumgeely shelter be replaced urgently citing the “appalling condition of the structure”.
He outlined that the bus shelter in Drumgeely was used by older residents of the town “who require shelter from the elements when waiting for public transport”.
Speaking at the meeting, Cllr Flynn labelled the approach towards bus shelters as comical. “You wouldn’t see it in Monty Python, it is like moving status, now you see them and now you don’t”.
Flynn continued, “Drumgeely is the oldest part of Shannon, the bus shelter serves a lot of vulnerable people who shouldn’t be standing in the elements. I would have expected it would be the first to go. The bus stop has been removed so I hope we have a stand with umbrellas for the winter.
His motion was seconded and supported by Cllr Donna McGettigan (SF).
