CARS are travelling through Cratloe at a “frightening” pace.

Traffic calming measures have been sought from Poulawilly to Lackyle in Cratloe by Cllr John Crowe (FG) “as a matter of urgency for the safety of the community due to the volume and speed of traffic through the village”.

This section of roads “runs the length of Cratloe moving between a 50kph zone and an 80kph zone,” senior executive engineer Tom Mellett acknowledged. “In order to facilitate a comprehensive design, I will refer it to Clare County Council’s road design office,” he added.

Speaking at a recent meeting of the Shannon MD, Cllr Crowe commented, “the speed at which cars are going through Cratloe is frightening”. He believed the local authority needed to act on the matter.

Phone calls on the subject are regular particularly late at night, Cllr PJ Ryan (IND) revealed. “It has been ongoing for a while,” he noted of the speeding which has forced residents to complain. “There is no village structure as such in Cratloe, there is a shop, a school and two public houses, it is essential the traffic is calmed”.

It took Cllr Pat O’Gorman (FF) five minutes to cross the road in recent weeks below Poulawilly Bridge after he went to inspect on a few cattle. He flagged that traffic is passing through Cratloe from Tulla, Kilkishen and Sixmilebridge for commuters to Limerick City, “it is like a rat run, there is somebody chancing their arm with every bit of small space to overtake”.
