Ennistymon collect first points after withstanding Lissycasey rally
Ennistymon 0-12
Lissycasey 0-11
Venue: Lissycasey GAA Pitch

After both clubs fell to opening round defeats, the appetite to put points on the board was abundantly clear in the closing moments of the contest though not so evident prior to this.
Had they left Lissycasey without a win, Ennistymon would have been forced to indulge in an exercise of soul-searching having nearly thrown away a seven point advantage. Crucially, their first half foundations paid dividends while their established and experienced led the way at their smooth and rocky patches to see them prevail, the manner of which they steered home will certainly build character.
With the assistance of the gale, Ennistymon built up a 0-05 0-00 advantage by the sounding of the half-time whistle. Niall Canavan converted a mark with just under five minutes played, Keelan Guyler chipped over a free before a Ryan Barry double off his left boot was followed by Sean Rouine raising a white flag on fifteen minutes.
Guyler kicked the first two scores on the restart to bring Ennistymon’s lead to seven but at this juncture newly appointed Lissycasey boss Aiden ‘Horse’ Moloney introduced Seamus Collins to the centre of the field, he gave an immediate lift and greatly influenced the comeback.
They had their first shot when the game was a mere thirty six minutes old. Within a twenty five second period, they put together two points with Conor Finucane opening the account and then centre back Niall McCarthy cut through the middle at ease before splitting the posts.
Éanna Rouine responded for the visitors before Collins left his mark on the scoreboard. A glorious opportunity went abegging when Ennistymon gifted their opponents a goal chance. After doing the hard bit of winning a free in defence, the North Clare side threw away possession as a Joey Rouine cross-field clearance went awry and straight to Enda Finucane who rounded goalkeeper Noel Sexton but fluffed the opportunity and instead of a goal had to settle for a point.
When Daire Hill, McCarthy and Fionn Cotter all added scores it meant Lissycasey had kicked 0-05 without reply and were now the closest they had been to their counterparts.
Experienced needed to come to the surface and it did with substitute Joe Dowling pointing, moments after his introduction to settle Mark Shanahan’s side. Lissycasey bit back and kicked three points in a row via the Finucane brothers to take the lead for the very first time.
Guyler levelled matters on fifty seven minutes and the evergreen Lawrence Healy ventured forward from defence to put Ennistymon back leading by the minimum before referee Fergal O’Brien signalled for four minutes of injury time. They extended their advantage to two points when substitute Paudie Considine added to their tally.
Time was afforded to the hosts to try salvage something for the game, they got a point through Conor Finucance but the equaliser never materialised.
As is the case during the Cusack Cup, few times will be at full strength and of these two sides Ennistymon had a stronger hand to pick from and it was telling as they settled into the groove, far quicker than their opponents, aided of course by the wind at their backs. The established heads proved to be the difference with Lawrence Healy solid throughout while Joe Dowling added a calming presence when needed, Sean Rouine chipped in with three assists over the hour providing impressively accurate cross-field deliveries while Eoin Rouine and Ciaran McMahon also got through some good work.
There will definitely be a level of comfort taken by the manner in which Lissycasey came back into proceedings, they left themselves with a steep hill to climb given their static opening half showing. The impact of Seamus Collins was telling but his expected move overseas will greatly weaken their hand for bigger days later this year even though they have an abundance of players to come back into the fold. As ever, Conor Finucane kicked some fine scores with Fionn Cotter and Daire Hill showing well.
