MAJOR TRAFFIC disruption has been reported in South Clare following the collapse of a road at Shannon Banks.
An alarm was raised shortly after 8:30pm on Monday evening after a section of water mains burst and led to the collapse of the Corbally Rd at Shannon Banks.
Emergency services are working to resolve the difficulties with two fire crews from Limerick Fire and Rescue Service dispatched to the scene. Crews from Clare County Council and Irish Water are also trying to rectify the situation.
Members of the public are to use alternative routes with the road expected to remain closed until at least Tuesday afternoon.
Clare TD and Westbury resident, Cathal Crowe (FF) witnessed the damage and said the burst water mains “has really dramatically lifted the road”.
He advised motorists to allow extra time for the journey, “It is very unlikely we will see a significant repair tonight so people can expect a road closure here in the morning, this is one of the main road arteries from Clare into Limerick City so leave early if you’re planning on going to work tomorrow morning, the best alternative route would be up through Parteen and onto the Long Pavement”.
Deputy Crowe explained, “The road has fully lifted, it is about 100 metres from Athlunkard Bridge, it is on the inbound lane towards the city, the kerbing from the footpath has lifted, it is all fully ruptured and a large gush of water came up with it, the road is in a very poor state”.
