NO ACCELERATION OF PLANS to alter speed limits will be made until after the next review which is scheduled to occur during 2023.

An appeal for speed limits throughout the village of Killanena was made by Cllr Pat Hayes (FF) who highlighted, “this is a very busy regional road with a number of very dangerous exits”.

A speed limit review was last completed in 2018, senior executive engineer with the Killaloe Municipal District, Niamh Madden stated in response. This took into account submissions from the public following a consultation process, “the outcome of this speed limit review came into effect in the county in mid 2019. Clare County Council will consider the location in question during the next countywide speed limit review”.

With the volume of traffic, current conditions are “very dangerous,” Cllr Hayes warned. He continued, “people in the area are living by a very busy regional road, church, graveyard, businesses and a number of junctions that come out”.

He asked that driver feedback signs be considered to deter speed coming through Killanena. “It is one of the locations used by people travelling to Galway, it is an accessible road across the region and I think people who have attended mass and events up there will know there have been some near-misses coming out of the church and around that church area, I would ask that we might do an evaluation in terms of the speed cameras to show the need for speed controls”.

Support for the motion was voiced by Cllr Joe Cooney (FG) who echoed the call for any interim measures to be introduced before the next speed limit review.
