A farming accident has claimed the life of a teenager in West Clare.

One boy aged fourteen has died following an accident on a family farm located between Ennistymon and Miltown Malbay on Thursday morning.

Gardaí and the Ambulance service responded to a call shortly after 9am on Thursday morning. Emergency services pronounced him dead at the scene.

A post-mortem is to be carried out later this evening but it has been reported by The Clare Champion that the tractor overturned on the youngster causing fatal injuries. It is understood that no other persons were injured.

His body has been removed to University Hospital Limerick (UHL) where the post-mortem will be conducted. The Health and Safety Authority are to carry out a visit of the farm to investigate the matter. An Garda Síochána’s investigation is at an early stage.

The tragedy has caused immense shock and sadness in the West Clare community.
