Frances St

PARKING BEHAVIOUR OF DRIVERS in Kilrush has been labelled as “bizarre”.

Increased monitoring of the bus parking area on Frances St, Kilrush is to become more prevalent in light of instances of local drivers and those behind the wheel of commercial vehicles using the designated area for buses.

Highlighting the area in red was suggested by Cllr Gabriel Keating (FG) “to allow the TFI larger buses to park in this designated area”. He also asked that a bus shelter be provided adjacent to the bus parking area.

TFI Local Link Limerick Clare were contacted by senior executive engineer in the West Clare Municipal District, Alan Kennelly in relation to the matter. “There are two designated bus stops on Frances Street, and it does seem as if cars and other commercial vehicles are using these as parking spots. This seems bizarre are there is ample parking on Frances Street,” he stated.

He acknowledged that the current arrangement for buses in Kilrush were not ideal. He outlined, “I propose to have the traffic warden in Kilrush monitor these bus stops more closely and see if we can improve the situation that way. There are three bus stops in Kilrush (Bus Éireann stops on The Square) and none of the three are ideal. I hope that the Kilrush Master Plan, in consultation with the NTA, will identify a suitable location that all busses can use safely and one that is clearly identifiable as a bus stop”.

Subsequent to the motion, signs have been erected to emphasise that the area is a bus-stop. This has made “a profound difference,” Cllr Cillian Murphy (FF) observed, he coined it as “amazing” an ideal location had not been found in Kilrush. “It wasn’t for want of trying by local engineer. It was rejected by business in Kilrush,” Cllr Ian Lynch (IND) responded, he said constructive bus stops outside Tesco might be the way forward.
