An average of one accident a year has highlighted the need for safety measures to be implemented at Cranny Cross, an elected representative of Clare County Council has stated.

Both Clare County Council and Transport Infrastructure Ireland were name-checked by Cllr PJ Kelly (FF) as the two main bodies that must put public safety first and address concerns at the junction at the intersection of the N68 and L2138 (Cranny Cross).

A road safety inspection programme completed by the TII has identified that Cranny Cross is in need of a road safety improvement measure, senior executive engineer with the road design section of the local authority, John Gannon confirmed. “The Road Design office in conjunction with the TII have commenced the evaluation phase and will report back to the MD later this year once the initial design and approval phases have concluded”.

“It is a problem we have had for a long time,” Cllr Kelly told the most recent sitting of the West Clare Municipal District. “The plans are one thing, carrying out the work is another thing. There is an average of an accident a year there”.

Previous accidents at Cranny Cross have resulted in one fatality and another person being made “an invalid for life,” the Lissycasey representative added. He stated that a local farmer is willing to co-operate to complete the works.

Cllr Ian Lynch (IND) supported the proposal. “He has been consistent and has come up with solutions. I hope we get it over the line”.
