NEWMARKET-ON-FERGUS’ AMY MADDEN is part of the Republic of Ireland Women’s Under-16s football team playing two international friendlies in Portugal this week.

Amy a defender with Treaty Utd was included in Head Coach Tom Elmes’ twenty-one person squad for two international friendlies against a talented Portugal side this week.

An accomplished camogie and ladies footballer with the Blues, Amy first came to prominence on the soccer pitch while earning trials for North Munster at U12 level during her time as a student at Scoil na Maighdine Mhuire in Newmarket-on-Fergus.

In 2001, Amy’s mother Elaine McMahon became the first person to captain Newmarket-on-Fergus to senior camogie championship glory. Her father, Brian Madden lined out at all levels with the O’Callaghans Mills hurling club.

Proving the great pedigree of her family, Amy’s uncle Brian ‘Beano’ McMahon was corner back on the Clare team to win the 1997 All-Ireland minor hurling title while her aunts Moira and Catriona both collected a haul of senior championships with the Blues as well as representing their county with distinction.
