ENNISTYMON boxer, Louis Griffin is a national champion following his success at the All-Ireland Youths Boxing Championships.
Held earlier this month at the National Stadium in Dublin following a two year break, the championships were action-packed with the entire event taking place over the course of one weekend.
In his quarter-final bout, Louis produced a four-punch combination that would prove to be the downfall of his opponent, Ulster champion Darragh Porter.
Connacht champion, James Delaney awaited in the semi-final where a 3-2 decision went the way of the Kilfenora boxing club member. Nothing separated the pair in the opening two rounds, a looping left hook and right uppercut threatened to end Griffin’s campaign but he responded with a flurry of punches to turn the score in his favour.
Favourite, Aziz Abdulnasser of Ballymun Boxing Club and the reigning Dublin champion was Louis’ final opponent. The approach of the North Clare youngster by refusing to back off certainly caused an upset with the Patrick McCormack and Robert Cassidy coached teenager giving the Dub no chance to settle to make him the undisputed National Boxing All-Ireland Champion 54kg champion.
