Activity going in Shannon Banks โafter darkโ should influence the type of road improvements in the area, local councillors have argued.
Inclusion of the square to the rear of houses 9-14, 15-24 and 25-32 โat the token houses in Shannon Banksโ was sought by Cllr Pat OโGorman (FF) for the 2022 roads programme.
Acknowledgement of the recent work undertaken in Shannon Banks by the local authority was voiced by Cllr OโGorman at a meeting of the Shannon Municipal District. He outlined that a community alert group has been established but not a residents association.
This group flagged some issues with the Cratloe representative including the request issued. โThe car spaces are unique, they are all at the back of the houses. The square itself has deteriorated dramatically. There is one man living in the area that had a stroke, he finds it very hard to manoeuvre towards his car with his walking aid,โ OโGorman commented.
Other issues are also proving problematic in Shannon Banks, Cllr Michael Begley (IND) warned. โThe square is used for a lot of activity other than parking cars and children playing. I would suggest that if you can include it in roads programme and do an overlay job on it, it is not a huge area so Iโm not so sure of the costโ.
Begley said the measures introduced must not be โfavourable to wheelies and quick escapesโ. The Clonlara native continued, โthere is a lot of activity that goes on in that square after dark, I wouldnโt like it to be made more free for people who want to drive in and out in a hurryโ.
Senior executive engineer, Tom Mellett confirmed that the road would be assessed as part of the 2022โs programme preparation process.
